A. Overview

Teluk Cenderawasih National Park is the largest marine park located in Papua Island, Indonesia. The national park was inaugurated by the Minister of Forestry in 1993, and stands on an area of approximately ​​1,453,500 ha. The national park includes coastal and mangrove ecosystems (0.9%), coral reefs (5.5%), island tropical forest ecosystems (3.8%), and marine waters (89.8%).

Teluk Cenderawasih National Park consists of 14 species of plant, dominated by Casuarina equisetifolia. It also has 36 species of bird which 18 of them are protected, 196 species of mollusks (including Cowry, Strombidae, Lambis species, Charonia tritonis, and Giant clam), 209 species of fish (including Butterflyfish, Damselfish, Parrotfish, Rabbitfish, Clownfish and Sharks), and some turtles (Hawksbill turtle, Green turtle, Olive Ridley turtle, and Leatherback turtle).

The region has become such a comfortable place for whales and dolphins. Both types of animals can live at peace because people are prohibited to hunt both kind of animal, and the region also provides many foods for them.

B. Features

Visitors who are visiting Teluk Cenderawasih National Park will be offered with various interesting objects stored inside the park. If visitors want to do marine tourism, they may choose an attractive option between Nusrowi Island, Yoop Island, and Mioswaar Island. In one of these islands, visitors can enjoy the beauty of colorful underwater consist of various objects to spoil their eyes. Moreover, they also can observe the whales and dolphins for educational purposes and or other purposes.

For those who love to explore the cave, Mioswaar Island is the right option. Natural caves and ancient relics as well as hot spring containing sulfur without salt can be found in the island. The cave in Mioswaar Island is a historic cave because we can find the skeleton of Wandau ethnic ancestry inside the cave. According to local legend, they were the first people who came to this island. Besides the Misowar Island, visitors also can find another cave in Numfor Island that contains human skeleton, antique plates, and carved coffin. To find such a different nuance, visitors can visit Tanjung Mangguar that stores water cave with a depth of about 100 feet.

In addition to the islands mentioned above, Rumberpon is another island that offers various interesting experiences. Visitors can make the observation of birds, deer, marine tourisms, and can see the Japanese aircraft sunk during World War II on the island.

C. Location

Administratively, Teluk Cenderawasih National Park is located under two regions, which are Manokwari in West Papua, and Paniai in Papua, Papua Island, Indonesia.

D. Access

Teluk Cenderawasih National Park can be reached from Manokwari or from Nabire (the capital of Paniai district). The distance from Manokwari to the location is about 95 km and can be reached in several ways. First, visitors can use motor boats that are scheduled three times a week to take about 2.5 hours. Second, visitors can use the outboard motor to take about 6-10 hours, or use a boat trip PELNI to take about 18-20 hours that is scheduled once a month. Third, visitors can use Twin Otter aircraft owned by Merpati Nusantara or Cesna aircraft owned by MAF. However, after making air travel, the trip must proceed further with an outboard motor to take about 3-4 hours.

Meanwhile, making trip through Nabire, the location of the national park can be reached with the total distance of 38 km by motor boats to take about 2-6 hours (depending on motor boat type).

E. Ticket prices

Visitors who want to enter Teluk Cenderawasih National Park are free of charge. However, they should come to the Balai Teluk Cenderawasih National Park (the park office) in Manokwari to get the permission to enter the location (Simaksi). Meanwhile, for foreign tourists are required to obtain entry permits from the Department of Forestry.

F. Accommodation and Other Facilities

The area of Teluk Cenderawasih National Park has not been equipped with several supporting facilities yet. For those who want to stay overnight on the area can stay at cottage provided in Rumberpon district or they may stay at local houses. When visitors need a guide to explore the park, they may include the demand on the letter of application for permission to enter the park area. (Des Christy)
